America is in favor of the reactivation of a nuclear energy facility that was previously closed. Almost 50 years later, and America is ready to revisit this nuclear energy site. With the help of a $1,52 billion federal loan the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township, Michigan, has been revived. The Palisades nuclear power plant closed its doors back in 2022 and is now reopening due to deliberations that had been finalized in September 2024. America’s energy future has taken an interesting turn.
Prior to this plant even starting to generate much power again, the first indicator of America stepping up to the plate and dominating the nuclear energy power game can be seen.
The need to revive the Palisades nuclear power plant
During the Biden administration, the decision was taken to approve the $1.52 billion loan to Holtec International, the plant’s operator, which is more in favor of not just a restart of a project but a full force relaunch of American nuclear power ambition. The idea is part of the initiative to triple U.S. nuclear capacity due to concerns cropping up about climate change and the volatility of the fossil fuel markets, to name but a few.
White House climate adviser, Ali Zaidi, states, “Palisades is a climate comeback story.” Besides the comeback is great as this nuclear power plant can operate continuously.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has further approved a $1.3 billion funding for the two electric cooperatives, Wolverine and Hoosier Energy, which will be purchasing power from Palisades once it’s online. This is yet again indicative of the need to diversify our grid with cleaner energy alternatives.
