Visual arts enthusiasts in Accra gathered on Thursday, July 16, for – Art for Unity, an exhibition that seeks to use creativity as a bridge across social and political divides, while showcasing the richness of Ghanaian artistic expression.
The exhibition, which was scheduled from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at Gallery 1957, inside the Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City, near the National Theatre, was organised by the Konyo Museum of Ghanaian Art. Twenty-three works by eight Ghanaian artists namely; E. Owusu Dartey, Kwadwo Ani, James Cudjoe, Frank Asomani, Ayaovi Dabla, Joshua Kwofie, Hacajaka and Francis Nunoo, were all on display.
The exhibition took its name from Unity, a painting by James Cudjoe, reflecting its comprehensive message of bringing people together through art. “Our country seems disjointed at the moment. It is polarised“. “Art is a unifying force. It has always been used to bring people together. The whole idea is to help build closer ties among people through art.” A spokesperson for the Konyo Museum of Ghanaian Art said.
Apart from celebrating artistic excellence, the exhibition accentuated the growing role of Ghana’s creative economy in promoting social dialogue, cultural identity and economic opportunities. By providing a platform for both emerging and established artists, the event strengthened the local visual arts ecosystem, expanded audiences for Ghanaian art and encouraged investment in the country’s cultural industries.
Regarding art lovers, the exhibition offered more than an opportunity to admire paintings. It created a space where collectors, students, creatives and members of the public can interact, exchange ideas and develop a deeper appreciation of Ghana’s artistic heritage. Such engagements also help nurture the next generation of artists, by increasing public visibility and encouraging wider community support, for the creative sector.
The featured artists represent different generations and artistic approaches. The late E. Owusu Dartey, who died in 2018 at the age of 91, was celebrated for his mastery of watercolour landscapes, seascapes and other excellent media. Contemporary artist Hacajaka, is known for his unconventional style and experimental acrylic works on canvas. The 23year old self-taught painter – Joshua Kwofie, is steadily gaining recognition on Ghana’s art scene. And also, Francis Nunoo is regarded as one of the country’s promising young talents.
