Nigerian music star – Burna Boy, has strengthened his position as Africa’s most globally certified artist, amassing an extraordinary 173 music certifications across international markets, including eight Diamond, 27 Multi-Platinum, 50 Platinum, 75 Gold and 13 Silver awards.
The achievement accentuates the growing economic and cultural influence of African music on the global stage, pasting Burna Boy’s remarkable artistic journey as the horizon. At a time when Afrobeats and related African genres are reshaping mainstream music consumption worldwide, the Port Harcourt-born singer has emerged as one of the movement’s most influential ambassadors.
Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu on July 2, 1991, Burna Boy rose from Nigeria’s vibrant grassroots music scene, to become one of the continent’s most recognizable cultural exports. He first gained national attention with his 2012 breakout single – Like to Party, before releasing his debut album – L.I.F.E in 2013. His fusion of Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall and pop, popularly branded as “Afrofusion”, has since resonated with audiences across continents, helping introduce millions of listeners to contemporary African sounds.
Industry observers note that Burna Boy’s certification record, echoes more than commercial success. In the United States, Wizkid remains the highest-certified African artist by certified units sold, driven largely by the global success of – Essence, featuring Tems, which achieved 4x Platinum status. Tems has also secured multiple certifications through her solo work and high-profile international collaborations, while Rema’s global hit Calm Down featuring Selena Gomez earned a coveted Diamond certification in the U.S.
