Sixty-two years after its previous representation, Liberia has been granted a non-permanent member seat on the UN Security Council. With 181 votes, the west African nation was chosen by a resounding majority of UN members.
President Joseph Boakai declared that Liberia’s election was more than just a diplomatic win in a speech to the country following the historic vote. He praised the generations of Liberians who battled for “freedom, self-governance, and global solidarity” by stating, “This is a moment of honor and humility for our 178-year-old republic.”
