In a country grappling with persistently high rates of gender-based violence and severe crime, an 18 year old female student from Limpopo, South African, has developed a discreet, tech-enabled earring designed to help combat rising cases of assault and gender-based violence. The wearable device, which resembles ordinary jewelry, can automatically record audio during an attack and send real-time alerts to emergency contacts and local law enforcement. Bohlale Mphahlele, first conceived her idea at just 16 while still in secondary school. What emerged was the Alerting-Earpiece device that looks like a stylish everyday earring with a hidden camera and emergency alert system. This is another milestone in promoting security and protecting against gender-based violence in general. With the discreet press of a button, the earring captures images of an attacker and instantly sends a distress signal, complete with live GPS location, to trusted contacts and emergency services. The device is designed to do two critical things in moments of crisis – shorten police response time and preserve digital evidence that can support prosecution. A tech-novation response-solution to a national security crisis and sector.
South Africa continues to confront alarming levels of gender-based violence, with many incidents going unreported due to stigma, fear of retaliation and lack of faith in the justice system. Advocacy groups have tirelessly been championing campaigns for stronger institutional reform, faster emergency response and better survivor support services. Mphahlele’s tech-novation arrives at a suitable time and location, to support the existing system; and as a grassroots intervention-technology designed by a young citizen, who is responding to experiential realities in her community.
“I wanted something that doesn’t look like a weapon or an obvious alarm. It had to be discreet object; something people would actually wear every day”. Mphahlele explained during her presentation at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, where judges awarded her a bronze medal for tackling a real-world problem with practical engineering, bridging technology and trust closer than expected.
Safety experts note that wearable emergency devices are gaining global attention, but accessibility and affordability remain as barriers. Mphahlele’s prototype was built with cost-conscious materials, reflecting the economic realities of many South African households. Community leaders in Limpopo, have praised the project as an example of youth-led innovation filling gaps in public safety. Some have also urged the government and political leaders to consider a full integration of the device into the national security arm official, to boost emergency systems. Legal analysts say devices like the Alerting Earpiece could strengthen cases in court if footage is securely stored and properly authenticated. Also, they caution that technology alone cannot dismantle extremely rooted patterns of violence.
The young lad’ tech-novation, is a beacon to the South African political clime. Apart from the technical features of the Alerting fashion Earpiece, the technology is sending a message that South Africans are demanding safer public spaces and more responsive security institutions, amongst others. In a country where students have historically played central roles in shaping national discourse, Mphahlele’s project stresses how innovation is becoming a new form of civic participation. Educators involved in science and technology programs, say the recognition she received highlights the importance of investing in STEM education for girls and other younger generation, particularly in rural provinces.
