Togo’s ruling party won last week’s local elections with 75.3% of the vote, according to provisional results announced Monday.
The Union for the Republic (UNIR) won 1,150 of the 1,527 seats of the municipal councilors, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The National Alliance for Change (ANC) won 51 seats, while the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) emerged in third place with 38 seats.
The Democratic Alliance for Integral Development (ADDI), considered an emerging force since last year’s legislative elections, secured 34 seats while the independent grouping “Togolese, come, act” founded by the current mayor of Golfe 1, Joseph Gomado, won 24 seats.
In accordance with the constitution, the provisional results will be validated by the Supreme Court in the coming days.
More than 4.5 million registered voters were eligible to take part in the polls to elect 1,527 municipal councilors in the country’s 117 municipalities. But the election was marred by low voter turnout, according to local media.
