When Nigeria’s economy slipped into recession, Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi faced a choice: remain in the corporate comfort of Mercedes-Benz, where he had climbed swiftly through the ranks, or confront the crisis with a bold gamble. He chose the latter and founded Nord automobile line. One of Nigeria’s first indigenous car brands.

Nord is positioning itself as more than just an automaker. In a market historically shaped by Toyota, Hyundai, and other global giants, the company is testing whether Africa can shift from being primarily a consumer of foreign cars to a producer of its own. Already assembling durable and affordable vehicles, Nord has expanded beyond Nigeria, selling in Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Egypt.

The implications stretch well beyond business. Economically, Nord’s rise reflects a push for industrial diversification across Africa. A continent often caught between import dependency and the volatility of global supply chains. Socially, the brand touches on aspirations for dignity, self-reliance and jobs, particularly for young engineers, mechanics and families seeking affordable mobility. Politically, its success could strengthen calls for policies that support local manufacturing and protect regional industries.
