Guineans have voted overwhelmingly to back a new Constitution, according to reports. This paves the way for elections in the West African country, four years after Junta leader Mamadou Doumbouya took over in a military coup.
According to provisional results announced by the country’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Ibrahima Kalil Conde, the “yes” vote garnered more than 89% of ballots, allowing Doumbouya to run for president.
Opposition leaders, most of whom live abroad, had called for a boycott, describing the vote as a power grab with a predetermined outcome. Despite their plea, however, Guineans flooded polling stations.
