Renowned East African writer and literary giant Ngugi Wa Thiong’o has passed away in the United States at the age of 87.
A fierce proponent of using indigenous African languages – particularly Gikuyu—in literature, Ngugi championed cultural resistance to colonial influence and celebrated African identity through acclaimed works such as The River Between, A Grain of Wheat, and Petals of Blood.
His influential writings, including The Upright Revolution, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, and the politically charged play Ngaahika Ndeenda, resulted in his imprisonment by the Kenyan government in 1977.
