São Tomé/Banjul – Beyond the formal speeches and high-level panels of the 12th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary Conference, a quieter but potentially transformative conversation took place between Merck Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr. Rasha Kelej and the First Lady of São Tomé and Príncipe, H.E. Mrs. Maria de Fátima Vila Nova. Their discussions reflected a growing model of development diplomacy that links healthcare training, family wellbeing, media responsibility and cultural change.
At the heart of the talks was a shared concern for how health challenges are experienced inside homes and communities, particularly in small island states where limited specialist care can shape family futures. Merck Foundation’s decision to enroll São Toméan doctors in oncology and diabetes care scholarships speaks directly to this gap, aiming to reduce the need for families to seek costly treatment abroad and to strengthen trust in local health systems.
The First Lady’s role extends beyond ceremonial advocacy. As an Ambassador of Merck Foundation’s More Than a Mother initiative, she has positioned herself as a bridge between policy and everyday life, especially around infertility stigma—an issue that often carries deep cultural and emotional consequences for women and couples. Plans to broadcast Merck Foundation’s animation films in Portuguese on national television signal a strategic use of culture and language to normalize conversations that are often silenced within families.
Education emerged as another pillar of the partnership. Mrs. Vila Nova highlighted the “Educating Linda and Lindo” program, which provides annual scholarships to underprivileged but high-performing girls and boys. In a country where educational access can define long-term economic opportunity, the initiative reflects a social investment approach—supporting children today to strengthen the future workforce and civic life.
Merck Foundation’s engagement with media training also underscores the political and social dimension of health communication. By training journalists in São Tomé and Príncipe to report responsibly on sensitive health and social issues, the partnership recognizes the media not just as observers, but as active participants in public health outcomes and social cohesion.
Regionally, the conference co-chaired with the First Lady of The Gambia and attended by several African First Ladies, highlighted how soft power and philanthropy are increasingly shaping health diplomacy across Africa and Asia. High-level discussions on research capacity, women in STEM, and grassroots awareness campaigns revealed an effort to align political leadership with community-level impact.
As for São Tomé and Príncipe, the collaboration with Merck Foundation blends international expertise with local ownership, linking healthcare capacity, cultural expression, and family-centered social change. As these programs move from conference halls to clinics, classrooms and living rooms, their success will ultimately be measured not by statistics alone, but by healthier families, informed communities, and reduced stigma around some of society’s most sensitive challenges.
