Back in 2019, researchers estimated Psyche’s metal content of iron, nickel and possibly gold, at a staggering $700 quintillion, with gold reserves alone weighing more than 27 quadrillion tons. For families struggling with inflation, job insecurity, or tuition fees, that figure sounds like salvation. But economists warn the reality is more complex, because if such metals ever flooded global markets, their value would collapse, upending economies instead of enriching them.
The questions go beyond money.
